Questions to Ask About Payment Options

How to have an informed conversation about cost without making assumptions.

Ask the provider what payment options they support, what's included in tuition, and what costs are separate (kit, books, exam fees).

Do not assume any specific financial aid is available. Eligibility and availability are decided by the provider and applicable programs, not by this site.

Request a written total rather than only a monthly payment figure. Include tuition, registration, kit, books, uniform, consumables, examination, licensing and any replacement materials. Ask which charges are refundable.

Distinguish a provider payment plan, a loan, a scholarship and federal student aid. They have different eligibility criteria and obligations. Ask for the exact terms, interest or fees, repayment schedule and who administers the funding.

Do not assume every beauty course or school participates in federal aid. If federal aid is relevant, verify the institution and program with the provider and official StudentAid.gov information before relying on funding.

Verify your Virginia training and licensing pathway

Virginia’s Board for Barbers and Cosmetology regulates beauty-profession licenses and school programs. Check the exact school, program approval, current curriculum, application route and exam instructions before paying a deposit. Training routes can differ by profession; a short course or private certificate is not the same as a state license.

For Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Williamsburg, compare commute time, weekly attendance, total costs and supervised practice. Availability is provider-specific; this site does not verify or guarantee an individual provider’s current openings.

Sources: Virginia DPOR and Virginia Administrative Code. Requirements can change; the Board and current regulations control. Provider schedules, fees, admissions and outcomes must be confirmed directly.
