How Long Does Beauty Training Take?
There's no single answer — here's how to think about it.
Program length depends on discipline (cosmetology vs. nails vs. esthetics, etc.), state clock hour rules, and whether you attend full-time, part-time, or in evening formats.
Always confirm program length and graduation expectations with the provider directly. Outcomes are not guaranteed by this site.
Clock hours are not the same as calendar months. Ask for the required training hours, expected weekly attendance, holidays, missed-hour rules and the actual schedule available for the next cohort.
Graduation, examination and license issuance are separate steps. Exam scheduling, application processing and any required retesting can add time after classes finish. Do not plan paid regulated services around an unconfirmed license date.
Virginia curriculum requirements have changed over time, including Board changes effective December 1, 2025. Confirm the current approved program rather than using an older course-length estimate.

Verify your Virginia training and licensing pathway
Virginia’s Board for Barbers and Cosmetology regulates beauty-profession licenses and school programs. Check the exact school, program approval, current curriculum, application route and exam instructions before paying a deposit. Training routes can differ by profession; a short course or private certificate is not the same as a state license.
For Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Williamsburg, compare commute time, weekly attendance, total costs and supervised practice. Availability is provider-specific; this site does not verify or guarantee an individual provider’s current openings.
